China is accelerating the development of the virtual reality industry.
By the end of 2024, China had over 10,000 companies operating in the virtual reality (VR) sector. This was announced at the World Conference on VR Industry (WCVRI), which concluded in Nanchang, the administrative center of Jiangxi Province in eastern China.
Xie Shaofeng, Chief Engineer of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, noted that in recent years, China has built a self-sufficient industrial system in the VR sector. A diversified and integrated application ecosystem has been established, along with a relatively comprehensive environment for the industry’s development.
According to Xie, significant progress has been made in core breakthrough technologies, the development of industry standards, and the integration of VR with other advanced technologies. This underscores China’s commitment to the sustainable development of its high-tech sector and the strengthening of its technological sovereignty.
One of China’s notable achievements is the establishment of a regulatory framework for virtual reality development. Over the past few years, the country has developed more than 30 national standards and initiated nearly 10 international standards in key areas, ranging from virtual digital avatars to VR terminal equipment.
These standards not only promote industry standardization but also guide innovative development by providing unified technical benchmarks for manufacturers, developers, and investors.
Nanchang has become the permanent host city for the WCVRI, with six conference sessions already held under the auspices of the Jiangxi provincial government. The forum brings together key industry players, government representatives, academics, and businesses, offering opportunities to discuss trends, share experiences, and showcase new technological solutions in the field of virtual reality.
The development of virtual reality in China reflects not only substantial investments and a growing number of companies but also a systematic approach to creating a mature technological ecosystem. With active government support, standardization, and global cooperation, China aims to take a leading position in the global VR industry, transforming virtual ideas into tangible economic opportunities.
